Vivian Haggins Carawan, 77, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at her residence surrounded by loved ones.

She was a loving mother and grandmother known as "Me-Ma". She never knew a stranger and loved lots of laughter. She loved cooking, baking, and reading. She was a member of First Christian Church and a member of the Joy Class, whom she loved dearly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl G. Carawan, her parents, Lloyd and Lucille Haggins, her sister, Cora Pickett, and many aunts and uncles.

She is survived by a daughter Trish Salanik and her husband, Michael Salanik of Roanoke Rapids; and three sons: Tom Carawan of Portland, Oregon, Kenneth Carawan and his wife, Linda of Roanoke Rapids, and Marshall Carawan. Other survivors include her grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Salanik of Greensboro, NC., Michael Joseph Salanik Jr. of Roanoke Rapids, Kenneth Hunter Ross and Samantha Lee Carawan of Roanoke Rapids, Justin Earl Carawan of Va., Stephen, Anthony, Timothy, Leigha, Nathan, and Whitney Carawan, all of Gainesville, Ga.; her great grandson Tyler; and a brother-in-law, Lloyd Pickett of Mechanicsville, Va., and his children: Stephen L. Pickett and wife Diane and their children Alex and Mackenzie of Doswell, Va., Kay and Bob McGuire and their children Matthew and Stephanie. A special friend she loved as a son is Darrin Davis of Roanoke Rapids, and her caregiver Gail Patterson of Littleton.

The funeral service for Vivian will be at First Christian Church in Roanoke Rapids on Thursday, August 7 at 11:00 a.m. with Ministers Bane Angles and Mark Wesner officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids. Visitation at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services will be on Wednesday, August 6 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the home of Trish and Michael Salanik at 816 Allen Avenue.
